SUMMARY:Indigenous Anti-Human Trafficking Presentation and Memorial Round Dance
DESCRIPTION:At this event on Wednesday\, November 6th\, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.\,  the Ontario Native Women’s Association will be coming to TMU’s campus for a powerful talk about Indigenous Anti-human trafficking\, which you can either attend in-person or online. \nThe presentation will be followed by a pipe ceremony and\, to commemorate\, a feast catered by the Pow Wow Cafe\, which will be held in-person only from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. To conclude\, there will be a Memorial Round Dance\, a traditional Indigenous ceremony to honour and remember those who have passed. The dance will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.\, and will also serve as a remembrance to those impacted by residential schools\, overdose\, suicide\, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. It will be a celebration of life through drumming\, singing\, dancing\, and a circle of healing. Attendees are invited to bring a photo of a loved one to be included in the memorial song. DESCRIPTION:This event is presented by the Indigenous Education Council and School of Journalism from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.\, on Tuesday\, November 4th. Gabrielle McMann\, a recent TMU School of Journalism graduate\, will share her experiences as a young Indigenous woman navigating colonial systems that don’t reflect traditional Indigenous values. She will share her advocacy for better coverage of Indigenous stories and offer knowledge for those who work with or engage in media to develop better practices and account for past mistakes. Her presentation will end with a Q & A. \nMcMann is mixed Ojibwe from the Mississauga of the Credit First Nation. During her time at TMU\, she was the first Digital Editor for the Reconciling Journalism website. McMann focuses her work covering Indigenous art\, culture\, history\, and events.
